In fact, said Carol Dayn, the principal at Portland's East End Community School, "there's a lot to be said for it." The new elementary school has what may be the state's first "green roof," a covering of soil and low-growing plants on a first-floor roof section just outside the second-floor window of the teachers' room. Feb 8, 2006 - The Austin Wal-Mart broke ground in May 2005. The new store, covering 150,000 square feet, is under construction at 4650 W. North Ave. The Austin store will open with bells and whistles unlike any other store in the retail giant’s chain. The Austin store will be the first U.S. Wal-Mart with a green roof. At 67,000 square feet, the roof will be covered with flowering plants adaptable to Chicago’s cold weather. City of Toronto unveils unparalleled green roof support!
Feb 1, 2006 - Today the City of Toronto released a press release that outlines their plans to help green the roofs of Toronto. After a study by the University of Ryerson which quantified the specific benefits that green roofs could help Toronto achieve. Green Roofs for Healthy Cities founder, Steven Peck, had the following to say about the announcement: "Green Roofs for Healthy Cities congratulates Mayor David Miller and Toronto City Council for adopting the first comprehensive set of green roof policies in North America."
